Empowering Leaders to Transform Disability Rights in Africa

Empowering Leaders to Transform Disability Rights in Africa

African Youth with Disabilities: Raising our Voices for Inclusion was a six-day gathering of 50 youth with disabilities from 12 countries across Africa. World Enabled worked with the International Disability Alliance and the Open Society Foundations to support and foster young disabled leaders in Africa.

We recruited the best and brightest leaders and developed video profiles, and testimonies that allowed them to share their stories.

The initiative was led by experienced leaders with disabilities as well as by young peer leaders and provided a unique platform for peer-to-peer mentorship and support. Specific focus was given to the general principles of non-discrimination, dignity, and gender equality and allowed the participants to frame additional specific measures from a youth perspective. In participant-led sessions, the young advocates worked through the barriers and solutions to improve outcomes in education, employment, communication and health for young people with disabilities in each of the participants’ countries. The network members have continued to lead and shape national and regional policy across Africa through their academic, professional and personal achievements.
